WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said American military forces will remain deployed in and around Iran until a “real agreement” is fully achieved and implemented, signalling a firm stance despite a fragile two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

In remarks posted late Wednesday on his Truth Social platform, Trump emphasised that US naval, air and ground assets—along with additional weaponry—would stay in position to ensure compliance and deter any escalation. He warned that failure to reach a lasting deal could trigger “bigger, better, and stronger” military action.

The announcement comes as the recently brokered truce shows signs of strain. Renewed Israeli strikes in Lebanon and differing interpretations of key demands have raised concerns about the durability of the ceasefire, even as diplomatic efforts continue.

A central issue remains Iran’s nuclear programme. Tehran has reiterated its insistence on retaining uranium enrichment capabilities, a demand that has not been acknowledged in proposals conveyed through the United Nations. Trump, however, maintained that Iran would not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, asserting that the issue would be addressed within any final settlement.

The strategic Strait of Hormuz also remains at the heart of the negotiations. Iran has agreed to keep the critical waterway open during the truce but has underscored its “dominion” over the passage, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supply transits under normal conditions.

Ahead of planned negotiations to take place in Islamabad, Trump expressed cautious optimism, describing a breakdown in talks as “highly unlikely”. Nevertheless, his comments underscore Washington’s readiness to escalate if the agreement fails to materialise on its terms.

According to AFP, diplomatic observers note that while the ceasefire has provided a temporary pause in hostilities, significant gaps remain between the two sides on security guarantees, nuclear policy, and regional influence—factors that could determine whether the current truce evolves into a sustainable peace framework.
