WASHINGTON: Russia is reportedly supplying Iran with intelligence information that could help Tehran target United States military assets in the Middle East, according to a report published by The Washington Post on Friday.
Citing three officials familiar with the intelligence, the report stated that the information allegedly shared by Moscow includes the locations of US warships and military aircraft operating in the region.
The officials said the support may be intended to help Iran track American forces more effectively during the ongoing conflict, according to Reuters.
The extent of Russia’s assistance remains unclear. However, the report noted that Iran’s independent capability to detect and monitor US military positions has been significantly weakened following a series of recent strikes by the United States and Israel on targets in Tehran and other areas last week.
The conflict has since intensified, with Iran launching retaliatory strikes while attempting to impose costs on the United States, Israel and their regional allies. The widening hostilities have also begun to draw neighbouring countries deeper into the crisis.
In one of the latest incidents, the US military confirmed that six reserve soldiers were killed in Kuwait after a drone struck a US military facility at Port Shuaiba. American officials have warned that further casualties are possible as the confrontation continues.
US President Donald Trump and other senior officials have cautioned that the escalating conflict could lead to additional American military deaths if tensions persist.
Responding to questions from Reuters about the alleged Russian assistance, the White House did not directly confirm the report. However, spokesperson Anna Kelly said Iran’s military capabilities were already suffering major setbacks.
“The Iranian leadership is being absolutely crushed. Their ballistic missile retaliation is decreasing every day, their navy is being wiped out, their production capacity is being demolished, and their proxy groups are struggling to respond,” Kelly said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin acknowledged that Russia remains in contact with Iran’s leadership but declined to comment on whether it was providing any military or intelligence support.
The ongoing conflict has also had broader geopolitical implications. Analysts note that the crisis has boosted global demand for Russian oil and gas, potentially providing Moscow with economic relief after years of Western sanctions imposed following its war in Ukraine.
Notably, the United States has previously supplied intelligence support to Ukraine during its conflict with Russia, highlighting how intelligence sharing has become a key element in modern warfare.
The Russian embassy in Washington and Russia’s diplomatic mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the allegations.
