DHAKA: Bangladesh’s interim chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has instructed the country’s armed forces to remain on high alert ahead of national elections scheduled for February, stressing that the vote will be critical for the country’s democratic future.

Bangladesh’s next parliamentary election is scheduled for 12 February 2026, and a constitutional referendum will be held on the same day alongside it.

During a meeting at army headquarters, Yunus said the military must fully support the election commission and civil administration while maintaining strict political neutrality and professional conduct. He emphasized that the armed forces have a vital role in ensuring a peaceful, free, and fair electoral environment.

“The credibility of the election depends heavily on public trust,” Yunus said, warning that any failure to maintain law and order could undermine voter confidence and the legitimacy of the electoral process.

The chief adviser directed the military to act strictly within constitutional and legal limits while assisting election authorities during polling. He said impartiality and discipline would be essential to safeguarding the democratic process.

Yunus noted that the upcoming referendum would allow citizens to express their views on the country’s future direction, while parliamentary elections would enable voters to choose their representatives. He cautioned that lapses by security forces could have lasting consequences for democratic stability.

Authorities are preparing for heightened security nationwide, with military checkpoints and enhanced monitoring expected during the election period. Citizens have been urged to cooperate with security personnel and election officials to help ensure a transparent and orderly vote.

The February elections will mark Bangladesh’s first national polls since the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, amid heightened political tensions and regional scrutiny.
