KEY POINTS
- The signing reunites Moqim with Head of Cricket Mickey Arthur, who previously coached him at the Rangpur Riders in the BPL.
- The new left-arm/off-spin pairing of Moqim and Bashir aims to give Derbyshire a versatile and potent attack in the middle overs.
DERBY, UK: Derbyshire County Cricket Club have moved swiftly to strengthen their T20 bowling options, securing the services of Pakistan white-ball spinner Sufiyan Moqim for the first half of the 2026 Vitality Blast season.
The signing comes just a week after the club announced the acquisition of England Test spinner Shoaib Bashir, signalling a clear intent to build a potent spin attack.
The left-arm orthodox bowler will join the Derbyshire Falcons as a short-term overseas signing, covering the first six matches of the competition beginning May 22. Moqim is set to be available for fixtures against Durham, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Essex, and Nottinghamshire (twice).
Reunited with Mickey Arthur
The signing reunites the 26-year-old with Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur. The pair previously worked together at the Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). During the 2026 BPL season, Moqim made a significant impression in his three appearances, emerging as the tournament’s most economical bowler with a remarkable economy rate of 4.33 while also taking three wickets.
“Sufiyan is a talented bowler with excellent control and a smart cricket brain,” said Arthur. “Having worked with him in Bangladesh, I know he will add great quality and variety to our attack for the start of the Blast campaign.”

Established international pedigree
Moqim brings considerable international experience to Derbyshire. Since his T20I debut for Pakistan in 2023, he has played 19 matches, claiming 27 wickets at an average of 14.74 and an economy rate of 6.28. He also has eight wickets from four One-Day Internationals, played between December 2024 and August 2025.
Moqim was not included in Pakistan’s upcoming T20I series against Australia, a decision that has made him available for county cricket. His last appearance for the national side was at the Asia Cup in September 2025.
Completing a new-look spin duo
Moqim’s arrival complements the earlier signing of Shoaib Bashir. The England off-spinner joined Derbyshire on a two-year deal after being released by Somerset, where he struggled for regular first-team cricket. The pairing of Bashir’s off-breaks and Moqim’s left-arm spin is expected to provide Derbyshire with a versatile and attacking combination in the middle overs of the Blast.
