ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to visit Switzerland next month to attend the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, officials said on Monday.

Preparations for the visit were reviewed during a high-level briefing chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad.

The meeting focused on arrangements for the prime minister’s participation in the 56th WEF Annual Meeting, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Office statement.

Foreign Secretary and Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to Geneva, along with senior officials, briefed the Deputy Prime Minister about the preparations, tentative programme, and agenda of the WEF.

The bilateral component related to the visit and extensive media engagements during the visit were also discussed in detail.

Ishaq Dar instructed to maximise the engagements with the incoming Heads of States, Governments and senior leadership of economic, business and financial institutions. He further stressed that opportunities should be explored to foster collaboration with private sector business entities.

The World Economic Forum annual meeting will be held in Davos-Klosters from January 19 to 23 under the theme “A Spirit of Dialogue.”

The World Economic Forum (WEF) is an annual gathering of global political, business and civil society leaders aimed at addressing major international economic and social challenges.

The forum provides a platform for dialogue on global economic growth, climate change, geopolitical tensions, technological transformation and inclusive development.

This year’s meeting will focus on strengthening international cooperation and rebuilding trust amid growing global uncertainty.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in October this year, held a meeting with the World Economic Forum’s President and CEO, Borge Brende, in Riyadh on the sidelines of the 9th Future Investment Initiative Conference.

During the meeting, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the World Economic Forum’s global business and innovation network.

At the 55th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos in January 2025, Pakistan was represented by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, who attended the forum to engage with global political, trade and business leaders.

He participated in high‑level discussions on challenges such as global debt, trade, technology and investment, and held meetings with ministers from countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar as well as with heads of international financial institutions and private sector representatives.
