LONDON: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) roadshow at the Lord’s Cricket Ground brought together cricket fans for a star-studded evening, but it was a cheeky comment from Wasim Akram that stole the spotlight.
While discussing the structure of T20 leagues globally, Akram, who was chairing the event alongside PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and former captain Ramiz Raja, took the opportunity to highlight what makes the PSL unique.
He praised the league for being short, fast, and easy to follow, a stark contrast to the marathon-like nature of other leagues.
But then, in true Wasim Akram style, he dropped a line that had everyone in stitches. “The best thing about PSL is that it lasts for 34 days or a bit more next year. It’s not three months long like other leagues. Bachay bade ho jatay hain, woh league khatam hi nahi hoti,” Akram said with a grin. “Kids grow up while that league never ends!”
The crowd burst into laughter as Akram, a former commentator in the Indian Premier League (IPL), playfully poked fun at the tournament’s length.
IPL, which has grown to become one of the longest cricket tournaments globally, runs for nearly three months.
This year’s IPL season will stretch from March 22 to June 3, with nearly 74 matches played in total.
In contrast, PSL’s more compact format typically lasts just over a month, making it the perfect choice for those looking for a quick, action-packed cricket fix.
Akram’s comment about the IPL’s marathon length immediately became the talk of the night, even overshadowing the event itself.
While his playful jab at IPL’s never-ending season was meant to be lighthearted, it certainly left fans with a good laugh and reaffirmed the charm of the PSL’s shorter, sweeter format.
