The Field Marshal was talking to Secretary of Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Larijani, at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on bilateral cooperation, regional security issues, and the importance of strengthening ties between Pakistan and Iran.

In his remarks, Ali Larijani acknowledged Pakistan’s vital role in ensuring peace and security in the region and expressed his commitment to furthering Iran-Pakistan ties.

“He underlined the significance of dialogue and partnership between the two nations to tackle regional challenges and ensure long-term stability,” ISPR added.

Larijani, who arrived in Pakistan on Monday, held meetings yesterday with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.

According to the Iranian embassy in Islamabad, Dr Larijani’s visit is of extraordinary importance, signalling a new strategic phase in Pakistan-Iran relations.

The two countries share a 900-kilometre porous border, which they aim to develop as a channel for enhancing transport and energy cooperation, as part of wider efforts to strengthen regional connectivity and economic integration.

Islamabad and Tehran have also voiced their desire in recent months to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion.
