GAZA CITY/BEIRUT: Israeli military carried out fresh strikes on Gaza and southern Lebanon on Wednesday, killing and wounding several people in violation of ceasefire deals with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Gaza’s Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Bassal said that Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip killed at least 22 people on Wednesday, despite the fragile US-brokered ceasefire.

Raising an earlier toll of 11, the spokesman for the agency said 12 people were killed in the north of the Strip, in the Gaza City area, while a further 10 were killed in strikes in the south, around Khan Younis.

Medics and local hospitals reported that Israeli strikes hit residential buildings, a UNRWA facility and public areas across Gaza.

The Israeli military said it was striking Hamas targets after the Palestinian group’s fighters opened fire toward an area where troops were operating in the territory’s south.

“This action constitutes a violation of the ceasefire agreement. No IDF (Israeli military) injuries were reported,” the military said in a statement.

Despite the Israeli attacks, a fragile truce has been holding in Gaza since October 10, based on a US-brokered deal.

Wafa, the Palestinian news agency, said one person was killed and 10 were wounded after an Israeli air raid on Salah al-Din Street in Gaza City.

A medical source at al-Ahli Arab Hospital told Al Jazeera that five people, including a child, were killed when a building sheltering displaced people in the Zeitoun neighbourhood was struck by Israeli military.

Gaza health officials and the Government Media Office said Israeli attacks recorded since the October 10 ceasefire number in the hundreds.

The Government Media Office said there had been about 393 Israeli attacks that killed 279 Palestinians and wounded 652 others since the US-brokered truce took effect.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said that since the ceasefire took effect in mid-October, 301 Palestinians have been killed and 672 people wounded by Israeli attacks.

The health ministry said that the Israeli bombardment campaign has killed at least 69,513 people and wounded 170,745 others in Gaza since October 7, 2023.

Israeli forces said they had struck areas in Khan Younis and Al-Mawasi, saying operations were in response to gunfire and other threats to its troops, according to Israeli Army Radio.

The army said it had carried out strikes after being fired on near Rafah.

Attacks in southern Lebanon

Meanwhile, in Lebanon, Israeli air strikes and drone attacks hit southern towns and a Palestinian refugee camp, killing dozens, residents and local agencies reported.

Lebanese authorities and witnesses said an Israeli strike on the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp near Sidon killed at least 14 people on Tuesday. Lebanese paramedics were searching for remains in the wreckage after the Israeli strikes.

The Israeli military confirmed operations in southern Lebanon and said it targeted what it described as Hezbollah and other resistance groups’ infrastructure.

Footage shared on social media and verified by Al Jazeera shows Israeli warplanes striking the Lebanese town of Aynata earlier on Wednesday.

Lebanon’s National News Agency said the air strike hit a house and damaged surrounding homes in a residential neighbourhood.

On Wednesday, Israel also issued evacuation warnings for the villages of Deir Kifa and Chehour in Lebanon and shared maps of buildings it said would be struck.

The Israeli military said it struck Hezbollah weapons storage facilities in several southern Lebanese towns on Wednesday.

The Israeli military has kept up frequent air strikes in Lebanon in spite of a ceasefire sealed last November that sought to end more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah.

The latest raids came a day after 14 people were killed in a strike on a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon — the deadliest attack since the truce came into effect.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) later said raids hit all four locations.

In Deir Kifa, Lebanese soldiers deployed near the targeted building, which collapsed after the strike, AFP reported.

Under heavy US pressure and fears of expanded Israeli attacks, Lebanon has committed to disarming Hezbollah, but the group has rejected the idea of handing over its weapons.

Earlier Wednesday, Lebanon’s health ministry said one person was killed and 11 others wounded in an Israeli strike on a vehicle in south Lebanon’s Tiri.

The NNA reported that the man killed worked for the local municipality, and said the strike took place as a university bus carrying students passed by, wounding some on board.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported widespread damage in towns hit and said schools were evacuated after the warnings.

Israeli army threats to bomb Tair Filsi

Video circulating on social media shows an Israeli air strike on the town in South Lebanon, a short while after it issued threats saying it would bomb the town and one other, Aynata.

The footage below has been verified by Al Jazeera’s fact-checking unit.

A social media clip shows the moment Israeli air strikes hit a building in the southern Lebanese village.

The Israeli army had threatened attacks on the village roughly 90 minutes prior to the strike.

West Bank and wider fallout

Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces imposed a full curfew on the town of Beit Ummar and demolished homes in Anata and Marj al-Ghazal, Wafa reported.

Local activists said dozens of residents were detained and movement was restricted.

Aid agencies and UN officials have warned that the humanitarian situation remains dire in Gaza. Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, told Al Jazeera that aid is insufficient, describing shortages of food, water and medical supplies and warning that winter will compound suffering.

The UNRWA chief urged fuller and faster opening of crossings to allow supplies into Gaza.

Political and international developments

The Israeli escalation came after the UN Security Council approved a US-backed resolution to create an interim international administration and stabilisation force for Gaza as part of a broader peace plan presented by US President Donald Trump.

The resolution passed 13-0, with Russia and China abstaining. Trump has hailed progress, but on the ground, many Palestinians remain focused on immediate needs rather than diplomatic initiatives.

Human rights groups and some scholars have accused Israel of actions amounting to crimes against humanity and, in some statements, genocide.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the war is not over and has defended operations as necessary to eliminate threats and prevent rearmament by militant groups.
