LOS ANGELES: Jennifer Lopez has found herself at the centre of controversy after her ex-husband, Ojani Noa, launched a blistering social media attack in response to her recent comments about former partners.
The 56-year-old singer and actress recently spoke candidly about her romantic history, saying that she had not always been loved in return.
“What I learned, it’s not that I’m not lovable – it’s that they’re not capable,” Lopez said in a recent interview. “They don’t have it in them.”
Her comments, interpreted as a reflection on her past relationships, appeared to trigger a fiery reaction from Noa, who was Lopez’s first husband. The pair married in 1997 but divorced less than a year later.
Noa accuses Lopez of “playing the victim”
Responding in a lengthy Instagram post, Noa accused the pop icon of distorting the truth about their relationship.
“Stop putting us down. Stop putting me down with your victim card. The problem is not us – not me. The problem is you,” he wrote.
In his post, Noa alleged that Lopez had cheated during their brief marriage, claiming she “decided to lie and cheat” while he “stayed” despite her behaviour.
“You begged me to keep the marriage intact to avoid bad press,” Noa continued. “Tell the truth for once… You should be embarrassed, ashamed of yourself.”
Reuniting with Affleck professionally
The controversy comes as Lopez has been publicly reunited with her most famous ex, Ben Affleck, to promote their new film Kiss of the Spider Woman.
The former couple made their first red-carpet appearance together since finalising their divorce earlier this year.
Despite their split, the two appeared on amicable terms at the New York premiere, with Affleck praising Lopez’s performance in the film.
“She’s amazing in the movie,” Affleck, 53, told reporters. “I’m as proud of this movie as any I’ve ever been involved with.”
A film that helped heal
Lopez stars as Ingrid Luna in Kiss of the Spider Woman, a reimagining of the 1976 Argentine novel by Manuel Puig. The film, directed by Bill Condon, is co-produced by Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity.
Speaking to Today, Lopez acknowledged Affleck’s role in getting the project made. “If it wasn’t for Ben, the movie wouldn’t have gotten made,” she said. “I will always give him that credit.”
She also revealed that working on the film helped her through the emotional toll of their separation.
“It’s funny, the movie is about escapism – about how movies and art save us in the hardest times of our lives,” she said. “Doing this project really got me through a difficult moment.”
