New Delhi: Wednesday’s signing of the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has drawn widespread attention in India, with many citizens taking to social media to express concern over its potential impact on regional stability and India’s strategic interests.

The pact, which includes a commitment to treat an attack on one nation as an attack on both, is being interpreted by some as a sign of growing military and diplomatic alignment between Islamabad and Riyadh.

In India, the development has sparked a broader public debate on the effectiveness of the Modi government’s foreign policy, particularly in the Gulf region.

Many Indian citizens are viewing it as a serious diplomatic failure and a blow to New Delhi’s regional strategy.

“Shocking… Pakistan has signed a defence pact with Saudi Arabia. An attack on one will be treated as an attack on both. A serious strategic shift is strengthening Islamabad’s security. Yet Modi govt is distracted with photo-ops & propaganda while India’s influence in the Gulf erodes,” wrote one user.

Another viral post read: “Saudi has signed a defence agreement with Pakistan. Any att\@ck on either nation will be considered an att\@ck on both. It means, next time we do any operation, we’d be fighting both Pak & Saudi. Just FYI, Modi calls Saudi Prince ‘My Brother’. Another failure of our Foreign Policy.”

Hashtags criticising Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi trended on X, with users questioning how India’s once-close ties with Riyadh deteriorated to this extent.

“Shameless #GodiMedia defends the worst diplomatic failure of the Modi govt, even as his team studies the disastrous consequences of the Saudi Arabia–Pakistan defense pact, which essentially implies the Saudis might fight India in case of another military operation,” another user wrote, referencing media outlets accused of being pro-government.
