ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, met with the President of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Eloy Alfaro de Alba, on Tuesday to deliver a letter from Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
The letter, marking the sixth anniversary of India’s illegal and unilateral actions of August 5, 2019, urges the Council to uphold its responsibilities regarding the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
On August 5, 2019, India unilaterally and illegally stripped occupied Jammu and Kashmir of its special status, an action which has since then been rejected by the international community, Kashmiris, and Pakistanis alike.
In the letter, the Deputy Prime Minister has drawn the attention of the Security Council to the grave human rights situation prevailing in IIOJK.
Dar urged the Council to fulfil its responsibility by taking concrete measures for the implementation of its own resolutions on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, with a view to achieving a just, peaceful, and lasting settlement in accordance with the UN Charter and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The letter has also been transmitted to the President of the UN General Assembly and the UN Secretary-General.
Earlier, Pakistan reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) as Kashmiris across the world observed Youm-e-Istehsal (Day of Exploitation) to protest India’s unilateral revocation of the region’s special status.
Special walks and events were held across all four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. A one-minute silence was also observed at 10:00 AM nationwide to honour the sacrifices of the Kashmiri people.
In their special messages on the occasion, the President, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister have renewed Pakistan’s unwavering diplomatic, political and moral support to the Kashmir Cause and called for resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and aspirations of the Kashmiri people, a news release from Foreign Office Spokesperson said.
