LONDON: British director Mike Hodges, well-known for the gritty 1970s crime drama Get Carter and 1980 movie Flash Gordon, has passed away at the age of 90, Western media reported on Wednesday.
The director died last Saturday at home in Dorset, southwest England, his old friend and producer Mike Kaplan told US trade publication Variety and The Guardian.
He first shot to fame by writing and directing a British gangster movie Get Carter in 1971, which also helped Michael Caine to emerge as an acting star.
Both stars immediately collaborated again in next year’s comedy thriller Pulp.
Several superhits on director’s credit
Eight years later, Hodges directed his biggest movie Flash Gordon, telling the story of the comic-strip character created in 1930s.
The renowned director had other notables on his credit, including The Terminal Man, Croupier and I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead.
