BEIJING, China: China conducted military drills involving fighter jets and warships encircling Taiwan, signaling escalating tensions in the region, western media reported on Monday.

These exercises, described by Beijing as a “stern warning” to “separatist” forces on the self-ruled island, reflect a pattern of increasing military assertiveness by China, particularly in light of Taiwan’s ongoing push for greater autonomy.

The drills represent China’s fourth round of large-scale military exercises in over two years, aimed at demonstrating its capability and willingness to use force if necessary to assert its claim over Taiwan. President Lai Ching-te, who assumed office in May, has taken a firmer stance on Taiwan’s sovereignty compared to his predecessor. He stated his commitment to “protect democratic Taiwan and safeguard national security,” emphasizing the island’s right to self-determination, which has drawn Beijing’s ire.

In response to China’s military posturing, Taiwan’s defense ministry has heightened alert levels, with officials stating that “appropriate forces” have been dispatched to monitor the situation. Taiwan’s military remains vigilant, with reports of increased patrols and readiness to respond to any potential incursions.

Additionally, China’s coast guard has been conducting inspections around Taiwan, creating a near-constant military presence that raises concerns among Taiwanese officials. Joseph Wu, secretary-general of Taiwan’s National Security Council, condemned the drills as “inconsistent with international law.” As tensions persist, the U.S. has called on China to exercise restraint, warning that such military exercises could lead to further escalation.
