NEW YORK:  The United Nations has denounced the terrorist attack near Karachi’s International Airport, which left two Chinese citizens dead, saying civilians should never be targeted.

Late on Sunday night, a massive explosion took place on a road near the Airport, killing a total of three people and injuring at least 11 others, including a Chinese national.

“We denounce this act of terror that we saw in Pakistan,” the UN chief’s Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said in response to a question at the regular briefing at UN Headquarters in New York.

“Civilian population should never ever be the targets and we extend our condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and governments of both Pakistan and China,” Dujarric said on behalf of the UN Secretary General.

Earlier, Pakistan strongly condemned the heinous terrorist attack near Karachi airport last night, which claimed the lives of two Chinese engineers while injuring another, Pakistan’ Foreign Office said in a statement on Monday.

The statement said, “We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims, both Chinese and Pakistani, and offer prayers for the swift recovery of the injured,”.

It added that this deplorable act of terrorism is an assault not only on Pakistan but also on the enduring friendship between China and Pakistan. The statement maintained, “We remain resolute in bringing to justice those responsible for this cowardly attack, including the Majeed Brigade,”.

The statement said that Pakistan’s security and law enforcement agencies would spare no effort in apprehending the perpetrators and their facilitators. It added that this barbaric act will not go unpunished.

The statement said that Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in close contact with the Chinese Embassy for coordination and facilitation.  Pakistan and China are close partners and iron-brothers, united by a bond of mutual respect and shared destiny, it said. Islamabad reaffirms it’s unwavering resolve to the safety and security of Chinese nationals, projects, and institutions in Pakistan, and will continue to work hand in hand with our Chinese brothers to defeat the forces of terror, the statement further said.
