LONDON: A footage of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling on Hamas to return “the sausages” as he urged a peaceful solution to the Gaza conflict with Israel went viral on Tuesday.

The PM’s slip of the tongue came while he was talking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, as he meant to say “hostages.”

Having first called for “de-escalation and restraint at the border between Israel and Lebanon,” Starmer moved on to the Gaza war.

“I call again for an immediate truce in the Gaza Strip, the return of the sausages,” he added, before rapidly correcting himself with “the hostages” as clapping rang out around the hall.

“And a recommitment to the two-state solution, a recognized state of Palestine alongside Israel,” he maintained.

However, his video went viral on social media and by Tuesday evening it was the second most shared video on internet.

British media were speedy to jump on Starmer’s fault, with the left-wing Guardian calling it a “blunder” and the right-wing Daily Mail noticing a “faux-pas.”
