SAN FRANCISCO: Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg has outlined an ambitious vision for the United States and his company to lead the global artificial intelligence race, as competition intensifies with OpenAI, Anthropic and Chinese developers.
In an essay published on Monday, Zuckerberg argued that advanced AI should be widely accessible rather than concentrated among governments and major institutions.
“Rather than centralising superintelligence, we should distribute it widely and give every person the ability to direct it,” Zuckerberg wrote.
Superintelligence refers to a theoretical stage at which AI capabilities exceed human intelligence.
Zuckerberg advocated “open weight” models, which allow developers to download parameters governing how AI systems operate. Rivals OpenAI and Anthropic primarily offer closed models.
Meta expands AI push
Meta also announced Glimmer, a new open-weight model designed to require less computing power while remaining capable of operating AI agents that can perform tasks with limited human intervention.

The company has invested billions of dollars in Meta Superintelligence Labs as it seeks to compete with leading US developers and increasingly capable Chinese companies, including Alibaba, DeepSeek and Moonshot.
Meta expects to spend up to $145 billion this year as it expands its AI infrastructure and capabilities.
Zuckerberg also called for a flexible US regulatory environment, arguing that unnecessary delays could weaken American competitiveness as foreign AI models advance.
His comments come amid growing debate in Washington over regulating increasingly powerful AI systems.
Meta separately plans to launch a $1 billion fund to support communities surrounding its data centres as opposition to the environmental and infrastructure impact of such facilities grows.
With 3.6 billion users across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Meta is betting that open AI models and massive infrastructure investment can strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving global AI race.
