Brazilian Football legend Pele is receiving medical attention after chemotherapy treatment failed to have the expected results as he battles cancer, according to the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.

Football player Pele is fighting colon cancer

Pelé, 82, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday to review his cancer treatment and was later diagnosed with respiratory disease, as medical reports said. Brazilian Pele is considered one of the greatest football players. His manager at Albert Einstein Hospital, Sao Paulo, did not immediately respond for comment when requested.

According to the medical report released on Friday,  Pele had a complete response to treatment and is in a stable condition “with general health improvement.”

He had a colonoscopy in September 2021 and received full-time hospital care. Folha de S. Paulo reported that chemotherapy has been stopped and Pelé is in palliative care and is being treated only for symptoms including pain and shortness of breath.

The newspaper also said he had general swelling and heart problems when he was admitted to hospital a couple of days before, as previously reported by ESPN Brazil.

Through his Instagram, Pele said on Thursday that he is in a hospital for a “monthly visit” and thanked his followers for the good news.

The former Brazilian, Santos and New York Cosmos player posted a picture of his face in a house in Qatar, where the World Cup is being held, alongside a message that read ‘Get well soon’.

Brazil fans displayed signs with the same message at Lusail Stadium on Friday before the national football team beat Cameroon 1-0.
