UTTAR PRADESH: Police in northern India have accused rats of consuming hundreds of kilograms of cannabis that was confiscated from drug dealers and placed in police warehouses, reported CNN.

The local police in the city of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh were unable to produce around 200 kilograms of seized cannabis that was to be used as evidence in a case, according to court documents.

The police were directed to present 386 kilograms of cannabis as evidence before the court, but the prosecution said that rats could have affected more than 700 kilograms of marijuana stored in several police stations across the city.

‘Drug addict rats’, a common happening in Mathura

It was not the first time that rats in Mathura had cleaned up drugs that were kept as evidence. The court judge pointed to another incident where rodents were involved in ingesting over 500 kg of the drug seized in various cases which were stored at the city’s Shergarh and Highway Police Stations.

The court directed the authorities to safeguard cannabis amid the ongoing rat infestation in various police stations of the city.

A suspicious plot

However, there seem to be several plot holes in the story of rats consuming the drugs.

Mathura City Police Superintendent Martand Prakash Singh told CNN after the hearing of the case that the seized drugs were ruined by “rains and flooding”. He added that the report submitted before the court had no mention of rats and that the police had only told the court that the rains and flooding destroyed the cannabis.
