TURIN: Serbian tennis professional Novak Djokovic defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud 7-5, 6-3 to win his sixth ATP Tour Finals title on Sunday, tying Roger Federer’s record.
The 35-year-old tennis star, the oldest player to win the finals, finished the season strong despite missing two majors due to his vaccination status. He also won his eighth Wimbledon championship earlier this year.
This was Ruud’s third close call of the year. Additionally, he also lost the French and US Open finals.
For the Serb, who was given the all-clear to return to Melbourne for the Australian Open in January, it marked the conclusion of a great week.
He was taken into custody and deported from Australia due to his non-immunized status on Covid.
Novak Djokovic Aces The Finals
Seven years had passed since his previous ATP Finals victory. He will move from ninth to fifth in the new rankings released Monday. The win also comes with a check for $4.7 million.
On the other hand, Djokovic served incredibly well, denying Ruud any break points throughout the contest.
He made the crucial break at 5-6 to win the first set. Early in the second set, the Serb established control by breaking to take a 3-1 lead. He finished the game with an ace to win his sixth Finals championship.
