LAHORE: A lower court in the federal capital on Saturday granted a one-day transit remand to former chief minister Punjab Parvez Elahi after being taken into custody again from Islamabad.

Parvez Elahi, the President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had been imprisoned in Adiala Jail on terrorism charges. However, he was re-arrested by the Anti-Corruption Establishment just before his release, which had been ordered by an anti-terrorism court.

This development followed a previous day’s decision by an anti-terrorism court in the federal capital to accept Chaudhry Parvez Elahi’s bail plea in a case related to the judicial complex attack. The court had ordered his release in exchange for a surety bond of Rs20,000.

Following his arrest, Parvez Elahi was brought before duty judge Shahrukh Arjumand, in the judicial complex Islamabad. The judge approved the request from Punjab’s Anti-Corruption Establishment and granted a one-day transit remand to transfer him to Lahore. The judge also instructed authorities to conduct a medical examination and present him before the relevant court in Lahore.

Parvez Elahi’s lawyer argued that his client had been arrested for the 12th time in what he claimed were fabricated cases to prevent his release.

Sardar Abdul Razzaq, speaking to the media outside the court, mentioned that Elahi had been granted bail on Friday in a case registered at the CTD police station in Islamabad, and he emphasized that this pattern of repeated arrests had persisted for four months.

Anti-Corruption Establishment Take on Parvez Elahi Arrest

On the other hand, anti-corruption officials asserted that there were four ongoing cases against Parvez Elahi. These cases involved land ownership by him, his wife, and his sons in the Lahore Master Plan.

The anti-corruption spokesman claimed that environmental laws had been altered to expedite the approval of the Lahore Master Plan, resulting in illegal benefits worth Rs10 billion for Parvez Elahi and his family.

Additionally, there was a case related to the unauthorized increase in sugar production capacity to 42,000 metric tons. The third case pertained to irregular appointments in the Punjab Assembly, where merit was allegedly disregarded by altering the results of the testing company.
