BEIJING: The chief of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that restrictions several countries have imposed in response to China’s Covid-19 surge are understandable due to the lack of information from Beijing.

WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus asked China to be more approaching on the epidemic situation in the country. His remarks came following the US joined some countries in imposing Covid-19 tests on passengers from China after it dropped foreign travel curbs despite a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The European Union’s health department said however that such steps weren’t warranted for the moment in the EU.

Tedros Adhanom said on Twitter that the world health body needs more information to make a comprehensive risk assessment of the Covid-19 situation on the ground in China.

He said that it is understandable that the countries will act in ways to protect their people in the absence of comprehensive information from Beijing.

WHO head said that they remain concerned and encouraging China to tract the Covid virus and vaccinate the high-risk masses.

Beijing said this week it would end mandatory quarantine on arrival, led many Chinese to make plans to travel foreign.

Earlier, Tedros told the media that the WHO was concerned about increasing reports of severe disease in China.

China’s National Health Commission had said last week it would no longer release an official daily Covid death toll in the country.
