KABUL: Afghanistan’s opposition group, the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), has said that its armed campaign against the Taliban has entered a new stage following intense clashes in Zebak district of Badakhshan province.
AFF political chief Daoud Naji said on X that the group’s latest offensive signalled the beginning of a decisive phase in its campaign against the Taliban. “The decisive battle for liberation has entered a new phase,” he wrote, adding that the Afghan people would ultimately be the beneficiaries of the struggle.
Naji confirmed that Freedom Front fighters had launched coordinated attacks on Taliban positions in Zebak district. Local sources said clashes began on Thursday and continued into Friday, with fighting reported at several Taliban checkpoints in the area.
Taliban officials acknowledged the attack and claimed at least five opposition fighters had been killed during the confrontation. However, the group did not provide details of any casualties among its own ranks.

According to local sources, three Taliban commanders were also killed in the fighting.
Naji said the Afghanistan Freedom Front would soon issue a detailed statement outlining the operation and developments on the battlefield.
The latest fighting highlights continued security challenges in parts of Afghanistan, where armed opposition groups have periodically launched attacks against Taliban forces since the movement returned to power in August 2021.
