TOKYO: Three soldiers were killed and another injured after a tank ammunition malfunction triggered an explosion during a military exercise in southwestern Japan on Tuesday, in what authorities described as a rare and tragic training accident.
According to officials, the incident occurred at a training facility operated by the Japan Self-Defense Forces in Oita Prefecture.
Preliminary reports indicate that the tank’s ammunition misfired internally, causing a blast inside the vehicle while it was in operation.
The three crew members inside the tank were killed instantly, while a fourth individual sustained injuries and was taken for medical treatment. The extent of the injuries has not been disclosed.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as “truly regrettable.” In a public statement, she extended her “heartfelt condolences” to the families of the deceased and pledged a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the malfunction, focusing on whether it stemmed from technical failure, human error, or issues related to ammunition handling and safety protocols.
According to AFP, military officials have also begun reviewing operational procedures at training grounds to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Accidents involving live ammunition during military drills are considered highly unusual in Japan, where strict safety standards are typically enforced.
The incident has raised concerns about equipment reliability and training safety within the country’s defence forces. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
