ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said on Monday that the Afghan Taliban regime was trying to divert attention from the well-documented terrorist threat emanating from Afghan territory instead of addressing the presence of terrorist groups using Afghanistan to plan and launch attacks against Pakistan.

In a statement, Pakistan’s Information Ministry said attempts to shift attention towards its internal affairs could not conceal the Taliban regime’s failure to prevent terrorist groups from operating from Afghan territory.

“The Afghan Taliban regime’s spokesperson has once again resorted to rhetoric and diversion instead of addressing the well-documented terrorist threat emanating from Afghan territory. Attempts to shift attention towards Pakistan’s internal affairs cannot conceal the regime’s failure to prevent terrorist groups from using Afghanistan to plan and launch attacks against Pakistan,” the Information Ministry stated.

The Information Ministry cited a report by the United Nations Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, which estimated that around 6,000 Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) fighters were present in Afghanistan and reported Taliban support for the terrorist group.

“The UN Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, in its Sixteenth Report (S/2025/796), estimated that approximately 6,000 TTP fighters were present in Afghanistan and reported Taliban support to the group,” the ministry stated.

The Information Ministry said the findings of the UN Security Council report could not credibly be dismissed as Pakistani propaganda, adding that the Afghan Taliban regime must address the documented threat through concrete action rather than denial.

“The regime must address this documented threat through concrete action rather than denial,” the ministry stated.

The ministry also criticised the Afghan Taliban regime over its record on governance and citizens’ rights, particularly its continued restrictions on girls’ education and violations of fundamental human rights.

“The regime’s attempts to lecture others on governance and citizens’ rights also ring hollow in the face of its own record, particularly its continued restrictions on girls’ education and violations of fundamental human rights.”

The Information Ministry said Pakistan remained committed to dialogue but that meaningful progress required the Afghan Taliban regime to honour its counterterrorism commitments and take verifiable action against terrorist sanctuaries and support networks.

The ministry said Pakistan would take all necessary measures in accordance with international law to protect its citizens, defend its sovereignty and safeguard its territorial integrity. The ministry added that the responsibility for ending the use of Afghan territory for terrorist attacks against Pakistan rested squarely with the Taliban regime.
