WASHINGTON: A California man accused of carrying out a shooting at a gala dinner attended by US President Donald Trump is due to appear in federal court on Monday, as investigators work to determine the motive behind the latest incident of political violence in the United States.

Officials said the suspect, arrested at the scene on Saturday night, intended to target Trump and senior members of his administration during the high-profile event held at a Washington hotel.

The gathering was attended by leading political figures, journalists, and public officials.

According to authorities, the suspect attempted to breach a security checkpoint before exchanging gunfire with Secret Service agents. He was subdued and taken into custody. One officer was shot but was protected by a safety vest and did not sustain serious injuries.

Trump was swiftly escorted from the venue by security personnel. In a televised interview with CBS, he downplayed concerns during the incident, saying, “We live in a crazy world.”

Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said the suspect was not cooperating with investigators and is expected to face formal charges. He added that preliminary findings suggest the attacker was targeting members of the administration, though no clear motive has been established.

US media reports indicated the suspect was heavily armed and staying at the same hotel where the event was held. Authorities also cited references to a manifesto, though details remain unverified.

The incident caused panic among attendees, with guests taking cover under tables as security forces secured the area. The event, hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association, is a major annual gathering of political and media figures.

The shooting comes amid growing concerns about political violence in the US. Trump has previously survived two separate assassination attempts, including one during a 2024 campaign rally.

The venue itself carries historical significance, having been the site of the 1981 shooting of former President Ronald Reagan.

Authorities continue to investigate whether the suspect acted alone, while questions are being raised about security arrangements at high-level public events.
