Starlink Inflight WiFi: How Fast Internet is Changing Air Travel

Starlink is turning one of flying’s biggest frustrations into fast, reliable WiFi that can make streaming and working from a plane feel almost like being at home

For years, airline WiFi has promised passengers the world and delivered a spinning loading circle.

You could be sitting inside a $100 million aircraft travelling at 900 kilometres an hour, surrounded by some of the most advanced technology in aviation, and still struggle to load a simple webpage. Emails stalled, video calls froze and streaming was often out of the question.

Now, Starlink inflight WiFi is changing that experience.

SpaceX’s satellite internet service is being installed by airlines around the world, bringing faster speeds and much lower delays to passengers in the sky. On equipped aircraft, travellers can stream video, join work meetings, send large files and remain connected from takeoff to landing.

For the first time, airline WiFi can feel less like a luxury and more like ordinary broadband.

Why has airline WiFi been so slow?

Much of the older inflight internet infrastructure relies on geostationary satellites, which orbit about 36,000 kilometres above Earth. Because they are so far away, data travelling between an aircraft and the internet has a long journey to make.

That creates latency, which simply means the delay between sending a request and receiving a response. Older satellite systems can have latency of around 600 milliseconds, enough to make websites feel sluggish and video calls awkward.

Download speeds on many older systems have also been around 10 to 30 Mbps.

Starlink uses a different system. Its satellites operate in low Earth orbit, generally around 550 kilometres above the planet. Because the satellites are much closer, latency can fall to roughly 20 to 50 milliseconds.

In everyday terms, the internet responds much more quickly.

Speed is also dramatically higher. According to measurements published by Ookla in late 2025, no Starlink airline had a median download speed below 100 Mbps. Ookla is the company behind Speedtest, a widely used service that measures internet speed and network performance.

United’s Starlink-equipped aircraft recorded a median download speed of nearly 320 Mbps, while Emirates, airBaltic and Alaska Airlines also exceeded 300 Mbps.

For passengers, the difference is straightforward. Streaming a film, joining a video meeting or sending a large presentation becomes practical rather than frustrating.

Starlink’s biggest advantage may be reliability

Speed attracts attention, but reliability is arguably more important.

There is little benefit in having a fast internet connection if it keeps disappearing.

Ookla measured how consistently airline connections delivered at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload speeds. airBaltic recorded 98.3 percent consistency, followed by WestJet at 95.8 percent, Hawaiian Airlines at 95.3 percent and Air France at 93.7 percent.

Most of the strongest performers were using Starlink.

By late 2025, Starlink accounted for 47.8 percent of inflight Speedtest samples, ahead of Viasat and Panasonic.

That points to a bigger change in airline internet. Starlink is not simply making WiFi faster. It is making it more usable.

Can Starlink WiFi work from takeoff to landing?

Yes, on equipped aircraft.

Many older inflight WiFi systems become available only after an aircraft reaches cruising altitude, often around 10,000 feet.

Starlink can provide connectivity from takeoff to landing and, on some aircraft, even while the plane is at the gate.

That could fundamentally change how passengers use their time in the air.

Business travellers can continue working. Families can stream entertainment. Passengers can stay in contact with people on the ground rather than treating a flight as an internet blackout.

Which airlines offer Starlink WiFi?

The rollout is accelerating across the airline industry, although coverage varies by carrier and aircraft.

Hawaiian Airlines was an early major adopter and offers free Starlink on equipped Airbus aircraft. JSX and ZIPAIR also provide free access across fully equipped fleets.

United has one of the industry’s largest Starlink programmes, with hundreds of aircraft already fitted. Qatar Airways has Starlink on a substantial share of its Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 fleets, as well as some 787 aircraft, and offers it free on equipped flights.

Emirates is installing Starlink on its Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s, while WestJet has equipped most of its 737 fleet.

Air France, SAS, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and Aer Lingus are also at various stages of rollout. American Airlines has signed up, with Starlink service expected from 2027.

Southwest joined the Starlink race in 2026. Its first Starlink-equipped Boeing 737 entered service on June 22, flying from Dallas to Albuquerque. The airline aims to equip more than 300 aircraft by the end of 2026, although much of its fleet will continue using older Anuvu or Viasat systems for now.

Is Starlink WiFi free on flights?

Often, but not always.

Hawaiian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, JSX, ZIPAIR and airBaltic generally offer free Starlink WiFi on equipped aircraft.

United provides free access to MileagePlus members, while WestJet ties access to WestJet Rewards.

Southwest offers free access to Rapid Rewards members through its T-Mobile arrangement. Non-members can pay about $8 per device per flight.

The important point is that free Starlink WiFi depends on both the airline and the aircraft.

The aircraft matters more than the airline

This is where passengers need to be careful.

An airline may advertise Starlink while many aircraft in its fleet are still using older satellite systems. Installation is taking place aircraft by aircraft, and last-minute aircraft changes can alter the experience.

Passengers who need reliable internet should therefore check the airline’s app before boarding.

A Starlink indication is increasingly valuable, but it is not yet a guarantee across an entire fleet.

Starlink could permanently change passenger expectations

The biggest impact of Starlink may not be its headline download speeds. It may be what those speeds do to passenger expectations.

Once travellers experience a 300 Mbps connection in the air, they are unlikely to be satisfied with an aircraft where a webpage takes several seconds to load.

That creates a new standard for airlines.

For decades, passengers tolerated poor inflight WiFi because there was little alternative. Now there is.

Thousands of aircraft still need to be upgraded, and older satellite systems will remain in service for years. But the direction of travel is clear.

The question is no longer whether fast WiFi is possible at 35,000 feet.

It is how quickly passengers will come to expect it.

The days when “WiFi available” meant “good luck connecting” may finally be coming to an end.

At 35,000 feet, the internet is finally catching up with the aeroplane.
