TALLAHASSEE, United States: At least 12 people, including six children, were injured in a shooting near a football stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, during Florida A&M University’s homecoming celebrations on Saturday, police said.

Eleven of the injured suffered gunshot wounds, while at least three sustained serious injuries, including one person who was in critical condition, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell told reporters at a news conference early on Sunday.

The shooting occurred at about 8 pm local time near Bragg Memorial Stadium, adjacent to the university’s campus, following a football game held as part of the historically Black university’s annual homecoming weekend.

Fight Preceded Shooting

Revell said a preliminary investigation indicated that an altercation had taken place between individuals before the shooting.

He described the incident as an isolated confrontation involving two or three people. Police believed one shooter was involved, he said, adding that no arrests had been made and no one had been taken into custody.

Of the 12 injured, six were adults and six were juveniles, Revell said. The youngest victim was 11 years old.

At least three victims sustained serious injuries, one of whom was in critical condition, while eight were reported to be in stable condition, he said.

Police said the shooting took place near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, just outside Bragg Memorial Stadium.

University Says Campus is Safe

The shooting occurred during Florida A&M’s homecoming weekend, when the university’s Rattlers hosted the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions in a football game.

In a statement, Florida A&M University said it was aware of an incident near its campus on Perry Street.

The university initially urged members of its campus community to stay away from the area. It later said the campus remained safe.

“Our hearts are with the victims and everyone affected by tonight’s incident on Perry Street,” the university said.

Florida State University, located about a mile from Florida A&M, also issued an emergency alert following the shooting. It said there was no indication that members of its university community were involved.

As a precaution, Florida State advised students, faculty and staff in the Tallahassee area to remain indoors and stay alert.
