KABUL: KSrelief, the Saudi Arabian aid agency, continues to support tens of thousands of vulnerable Afghan families who have been left without access to other forms of assistance, amid a decline in international support for the war-ravaged nation.
KSrelief has remained committed to providing life-saving aid to Afghan civilians even when major world organizations ceased operations in Afghanistan after the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul in 2021.
Since then, the country has grappled with a dire situation as nearly 29 million people, equivalent to two-thirds of the Afghan population, urgently require humanitarian aid. Afghanistan faces its third consecutive year of drought-like conditions, compounded by the enduring impact of four decades of armed conflict.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recently issued a warning about a “critical funding gap” of $1.3 billion for operations in Afghanistan.
KSrelief Aids Over 24,000 Afghan Families
Amidst these challenging circumstances, KSrelief has been conducting aid distribution in collaboration with partners such as the Afghan Red Crescent Society and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. In the latest round of relief, their efforts have aided more than 24,000 families in various provinces, with plans to reach a total of 47,400 families. These families include from Khost, Ghazni, Maidan Wardak, Bamyan, Parwan, Panjshir, Daykundi, Kapisa, Badakhshan, Kunduz, Balkh Takhar, and Jowzjan province.
ARCS spokesperson Irrfanullah Sharafzoi emphasized the significance of this aid, stating, “This assistance can help Afghans meet their immediate needs.” The relief packages primarily consist of essential items like flour, ghee, sugar, and beans. Given the high unemployment rates and escalating prices of essential commodities in Afghanistan, many families are burdened with significant household debt, making this aid even more critical.
Mawlawi Matiul Haq Khalis, acting director of the ARCS, expressed gratitude towards the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center for their substantial support in 2022 and 2023.
Earlier this year, KSrelief extended its aid to eastern parts of Afghanistan, including Nuristan, Laghman, and Nangarhar.
