RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned the attack on the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Al Mayeda, owned by Qatar Gas Transport Company, in the Arabian Gulf.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry reiterated the Kingdom’s rejection of any actions that threaten maritime security, the safety of navigation and global energy supplies, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Sunday.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia affirms its solidarity with the State of Qatar in all the measures it takes to protect its maritime vessels and ensure the safety of its international trade. It stresses the importance of the international community taking urgent measures to ensure maritime security and the safety of international trade, and to enforce international law in this regard,” the foreign ministry said.

The Qatar Gas Transport Company vessel Al-Mayeda was struck on Friday night. The company said in a statement that none of the crew members were injured, and no environmental damage was reported.

Earlier, Qatar expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation of the attack on the LNG carrier. Qatar considered this a dangerous act that threatens the safety of maritime navigation and the security of global energy supplies.

In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Qatar reserves the right to take all necessary measures, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, to protect its assets and safeguard its vessels and their crews.

The ministry pointed out that the relevant authorities have initiated the necessary investigations to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also warned against the dangers of such reckless and irresponsible actions, and the grave repercussions they may have on regional security and stability, as well as the global economy – particularly the potential environmental risks resulting from the targeting of energy carriers, and the serious consequences for the marine environment and the water security of the countries in the region.
