RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Roads General Authority (RGA) is accelerating its digital transformation strategy by expanding the use of advanced technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and data-driven solutions to modernise the management and operation of the Kingdom’s road network.

The initiative is part of the authority’s broader vision to enhance infrastructure efficiency, improve road safety, and support sustainable transportation across the Kingdom, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Tuesday.

The authority uses a number of modern technologies, foremost among them is the Smart Control Centre, which operates around the clock to monitor the country’s road network in real time.

The centre continuously tracks traffic conditions, road performance, and operational status while analyzing large volumes of data to enable faster decision-making, improve incident response, and optimise traffic flow.

This intelligent monitoring system allows authorities to address issues proactively, reducing disruptions and enhancing the overall travel experience.

The authority is also using AI-powered forecasting systems and advanced survey technologies to assess Saudi road conditions and predict future infrastructure needs.

By analysing historical and real-time data, these systems help identify potential deterioration before it becomes critical, enabling preventive maintenance that preserves road quality, minimises repair costs, and extends the operational lifespan of transportation assets.

To further enhance inspection efficiency, the RGA has deployed an innovative road marking survey device capable of measuring road marking performance at speeds more than ten times faster than conventional manual methods.

The technology delivers highly accurate results, allowing maintenance teams to quickly identify faded or damaged markings and ensure they remain visible for motorists. Improved road markings contribute significantly to traffic safety by enhancing driver guidance and reducing accident risks.

Integrating modern digital technologies into road management

The Roads General Authority emphasised that integrating modern digital technologies into road management is a key pillar of its long-term strategy to build a smarter, safer, and more resilient transportation network.

By transforming road data into actionable insights, the authority aims to improve operational efficiency, strengthen maintenance planning, optimise resource allocation, and elevate the experience of road users across the Kingdom.
