MOSCOW: Russia has said its forces were progressing in all areas of the Ukrainian front, despite observers seeing very little movement more a year and a half after Russian forces launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine, local media reported on Friday.
In a statement, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed that Russia’s forces are acting competently and decisively expanding their zones of control in all areas. Despite the frontlines having hardly shifted in 2023, war has remained intense, with the nearly encircled Avdiivka the latest major flashpoint.

Moscow launched a renewed attempt to take the war-battered town in October, and observers suggest Russian forces have made incremental gains, though at huge human cost. Shoigu added that Russian forces are effectively and decisively inflicting fire damage on the Ukrainian forces, significantly reducing their battle abilities,”.

His ministry also announced earlier on Wednesday it took control of Khromove village on the borders of Bakhmut in Ukraine. Kyiv has said Russian forces had “considerably intensified” their operations in the east, but that its troops were holding on. Ukraine launched a counteroffensive in June following stocking up on Western arms. But it is challenging with Russian positions and has made only modest progress. A few days ago, it claimed it pushed Russian troops back a few km from the banks of Dnipro river, which if confirmed would be the first advance in the counteroffensive.
