ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed satisfaction at the positive trajectory of Pakistan-Turkiye bilateral ties and reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to further expanding cooperation with Turkiye, particularly in the energy sector.

The prime minister made these remarks during a meeting with Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, who called on him at the PM House in Islamabad, state-run APP news agency reported.

Highlighting a key milestone in bilateral energy cooperation, the prime minister noted that Turkish Petroleum has joined Pakistan’s offshore and onshore exploration activities.

He also extended an invitation to Turkish companies to further increase their investment footprint in Pakistan’s energy market.

Emphasising the historic and fraternal ties between the two countries, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of enhancing collaboration in the energy, petroleum, and mineral sectors.

Recalling his numerous interactions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan this year, he underscored the need for close coordination in view of the fast-evolving regional and global environment.

Both sides agreed that a ministerial delegation from Pakistan will soon visit Turkiye to explore further cooperation, particularly in the energy and power sectors.

The two leaders also witnessed the exchange of memorandums of understanding and agreements between Turkiye and Pakistan in the field of mining and energy.

The Bayraktar’s visit comes amid Pakistan’s push to attract foreign investment into its oil, gas, and mining sectors to ease severe energy shortages, cut reliance on imported fuels, and tap underexplored reserves.

Last week, Bayraktar announced that Turkiye is preparing to formalise a new energy accord with Pakistan covering offshore and onshore exploration.
