ISLAMABAD: In a historic first for Pakistani sports, the nation will welcome 10 Asian women’s tennis teams for the prestigious Billie Jean King (BJK) Cup this October, marking a monumental step forward for women’s athletics in the country and signaling the international community’s renewed trust in Pakistan’s ability to host world-class events.
The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) made the landmark announcement, confirming that the tournament is scheduled to run from October 19 to 25, drawing competitors from across Asia for what promises to be a week of thrilling, high-stakes tennis on Pakistani soil.
“For the first time in Pakistan’s sporting history, 10 Asian women’s teams will be arriving to compete [in the BJK Cup] on our soil,” PTF President Aisam-ul-Haq said in a vlog, visibly proud of the achievement.
A ‘game changer’ for Pakistani female athletes
Aisam-ul-Haq described the event as a turning point for women’s tennis in Pakistan, offering local players an unprecedented opportunity to compete against international opponents on home ground.
“This event will be a game changer, providing the Pakistan girls with a unique platform to showcase their talent and improve world rankings,” he added.
The PTF president revealed that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) had formally entrusted Pakistan with the hosting rights of the BJK Cup — a gesture he said reflected growing international confidence in the country’s capacity to organise elite-level competitions following recent security improvements.
Highest standards and a soft image for Pakistan
Regarding operational readiness, Aisam assured that the PTF would leave no stone unturned to ensure the tournament is conducted flawlessly.
“We are committed to ensuring that this tournament is conducted to the highest standards,” he insisted.
He said the PTF viewed this event as a powerful vehicle to project a positive and soft image of Pakistan globally, while simultaneously demonstrating the nation’s deep commitment to women’s empowerment.
“Through this tournament, we’ll tell the world that Pakistan fully believes in empowering its women,” he stated.
Equal opportunities for women in sports
Aisam further affirmed that the PTF was dedicated to ensuring equal opportunities for female athletes alongside their male counterparts, a principle he said was central to the federation’s vision.
“We are committed to ensuring our women players receive the same platform, opportunities and recognition as males,” he concluded, adding that the BJK Cup would serve as a shining example of that commitment in action.
