FIFA extended the invitation to the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) for the newly launched competition, which is designed to expand international football opportunities beyond traditional boundaries. The PFF has formally accepted the invitation, paving the way for Pakistan’s historic debut on a global stage.
The inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup is scheduled to be held in Indonesia from September 21 to October 6. The tournament will feature top teams from across the region in what promises to be a highly competitive showcase of emerging football talent.
Pakistan has been placed in Division 1, where it will face arch-rivals India, hosts Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
This participation constitutes a historic milestone for Pakistani football. It will be the country’s first entry into a FIFA tournament outside of the regular qualification campaigns for the FIFA World Cup or continental events like the Asian Cup.

For decades, Pakistani fans have yearned for such global recognition, and this invitation signals a new chapter of legitimacy and opportunity.
Beyond the prestige, the tournament presents a major strategic opportunity for the Green Shirts. It will allow the national team to test its mettle against established regional opponents, gain invaluable international exposure, and build much-needed momentum for a sport that has long sought revitalization in the country.
The invitation followed growing engagement and constructive dialogue between FIFA and PFF President Mohsen Gilani. His persistent diplomatic efforts were instrumental in facilitating the country’s inclusion, highlighting a renewed sense of cooperation between the global football governing body and Pakistan’s football administration.
With a chance to compete on a level playing field against fierce regional rivals and established footballing nations, Pakistan’s participation in the FIFA ASEAN Cup is widely seen as a golden opportunity to accelerate the sport’s revival at home and inspire a new generation of players.
