ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and deepening engagement in the railway sector, with a particular focus on investment opportunities and infrastructure development.

The understanding was reached during a meeting in Islamabad between Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi and the Russian trade counsellor.

Both sides discussed avenues to enhance collaboration in railway modernisation, connectivity, and potential joint ventures aimed at improving Pakistan’s rail infrastructure.

The minister highlighted that Pakistan Railways offers substantial opportunities for foreign investment, especially in upgrading existing infrastructure, expanding freight capacity, and introducing modern technologies to improve efficiency and service delivery.

Hanif Abbasi noted that enhanced cooperation with Russia could play a key role in advancing these objectives.

The Russian trade counsellor expressed confidence that stronger institutional linkages and sustained engagement would further deepen bilateral relations between the two countries in the railway sector.

He also emphasised the importance of exploring long-term partnerships that could benefit both sides through technology transfer and shared expertise.

Pakistan’s railway network spans over 7,000 kilometres of track, connecting major cities across the country. It also links industrial zones, ports, and remote regions, making it an essential backbone of national logistics and economic activity.

In recent years, the government has focused on upgrading the railway system to improve speed, safety, and efficiency.
