Pakistan: President Accepts Resignation of Supreme Court Judge

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Dr Arif Alvi on Friday accepted the resignation of Supreme Court’s Justice Ijazul Ahsan, the President office said.

Earlier, Justice Ijazul Ahsan had opted to quit the apex court a day earlier after the departure of Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi.

In a press statement, the President House said Justice Ahsan had tendered resignation under Articles 179 and 206(a) of the Constitution of Pakistan.

It said that the president accepted his resignation on the advice of Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar.

Earlier, On Thursday, the president also accepted the resignation of Justice Naqvi, who is facing accusitions of misconduct.

On Wednesday, Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi of the Supreme Court of Pakistan resigned after misconduct allegations.

“It was an honour to be appointed and worked as a Judge first of the Lahore High Court, and then as the Supreme Court of Pakistan. In the circumstances which are a matter of public knowledge and to some extent public record, it is no longer possible for me to work as a Judge of the apex court. Considerations of due process compel so,” the apex court judge said in a resignation letter sent to Dr. Arif Alvi. The letter maintained, “I, therefore effective today resign as a Judge of the SC.”
