ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir arrived in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, on Sunday to participate in technical-level talks aimed at advancing the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran.

The talks, scheduled for June 21, are being held as a follow-up to the agreement signed earlier by Tehran and Washington. The prime minister is accompanied by a high-level Pakistani delegation.

Pakistan’s facilitative role

The Foreign Office said senior delegations from Iran, Qatar and the United States would also attend the talks, describing the meeting as the first formal engagement since the signing of the Islamabad MoU on June 17.

Officials said Pakistan would continue supporting the understandings reached between Tehran and Washington through a balanced, constructive and principled diplomatic approach.

Pakistan had earlier hosted rounds of dialogue and maintained diplomatic contacts that helped pave the way for the memorandum.

Focus on regional peace

On the sidelines of the Switzerland talks, PM Shehbaz is expected to hold bilateral meetings with delegations from Iran, Qatar, Switzerland and the United States.

Officials said the meetings would reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to dialogue, de-escalation and lasting regional peace.

The Islamabad MoU seeks to support stability in the Middle East, including measures linked to maritime security and regional diplomatic engagement.

Officials said Pakistan’s continued participation reflects its growing role as a responsible facilitator of constructive dialogue among key international partners.
