ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Navy has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the marine environment and promoting the sustainable use of ocean resources as the world observes World Oceans Day on June 8.
In his message marking the occasion, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted the importance of oceans in sustaining life, supporting global trade, regulating climate and preserving biodiversity.
He noted that this year’s theme, “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet,” underscores the need for enhanced conservation efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems and ensure a sustainable future for coming generations.
The naval chief said oceans cover more than 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface and remain a vital source of food, energy and economic prosperity. However, he warned that marine pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction and climate change continue to pose serious threats to ocean health worldwide.
Importance of public participation
Admiral Ashraf emphasised the role of Marine Protected Areas in conserving biodiversity and protecting fragile ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, fish populations and coastal habitats.
He said effective management of such areas strengthens ecological resilience, supports sustainable fisheries and helps mitigate the effects of climate change.
The naval chief also stressed the importance of public participation in protecting marine resources.
He encouraged individuals and communities to reduce plastic waste, prevent water pollution, support sustainable fishing practices and take part in coastal clean-up activities.
Shared responsibility
Highlighting Pakistan Navy’s efforts in this regard, Admiral Ashraf said the force remains steadfast in safeguarding the country’s maritime environment.
He noted that Pakistan Navy regularly conducts coastal and sea-cleaning campaigns, awareness drives and environmental programmes aimed at reducing marine pollution and protecting the Arabian Sea.
“The protection of our oceans is a shared responsibility and national priority,” he said, urging government institutions, environmental organisations, maritime stakeholders and the public to work together for the conservation of marine resources.
He called for stronger collaboration and accelerated action to ensure that future generations inherit a healthy, resilient and productive marine environment.
