ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has said the government is in talks with Netflix and other leading international streaming platforms to secure sustainable partnership opportunities for Pakistani creators through international visibility.

The minister said the initiative is aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s entertainment industry by creating new avenues for local talent, promoting high-quality film and television productions, and expanding the international reach of Pakistani content.

Ahsan Iqbal added that the government is also working to position Pakistan as a competitive player in the global digital entertainment landscape by encouraging innovation, investment, and cross-border collaboration in the creative sector.

The minister further announced that the government is actively pursuing the development of Pakistan’s own independent over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform, which will serve as a dedicated hub for showcasing the country’s diverse stories, culture, and creative talent to audiences around the world.

In a statement, the federal minister said Pakistani dramas and films were gaining widespread popularity and appreciation globally, making the creative and cultural industry a key pillar of the country’s export strategy under the “Uraan Pakistan” initiative.

Ahsan Iqbal said leading streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are vital gateways for reaching global audiences. However, he regretted that regional political dynamics have, for years, limited the presence of Pakistani content on these platforms, preventing it from receiving the international exposure it deserves.

To address the issue, the minister said the government is engaged in discussions with Netflix and other major global streaming services to explore adjustments to the existing regional framework, with the aim of creating fair and sustainable opportunities for Pakistani films, television productions, and digital content to reach international audiences.

“Our goal is clear: secure an equitable share of space and open sustainable partnership avenues for Pakistani creators,” he added.
