ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Google LLC on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen child online safety and promote responsible use of digital platforms across Pakistan.

The agreement will see the two organisations collaborate on a Child Safety Programme aimed at raising awareness, providing education and building the capacity of parents, teachers and caregivers to help children navigate the digital world safely.

Under the initiative, PTA and Google will develop online safety awareness material in English and local languages, conduct training programmes at educational institutions and support a nationwide outreach campaign.

The campaign aims to connect millions of Pakistani families with localised digital safety resources and tutorials while helping adults better understand the tools available to protect children online.

Focus on digital literacy

Speaking at the signing ceremony, PTA Chairman Maj Gen (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman stressed the importance of collective action and cooperation among stakeholders to safeguard children as their exposure to digital platforms continues to grow.

PTA Member for Compliance and Enforcement Dr Khawar Siddique Khokhar highlighted the need to improve digital literacy and encourage responsible use of online platforms.

He said such efforts could contribute to creating a safer digital environment for children and families across the country.

The collaboration places particular emphasis on equipping parents and teachers with practical resources that can help them guide children’s online activities and raise awareness about digital risks.

With internet access and online platforms increasingly becoming part of children’s education, entertainment and social interaction, online safety has emerged as an important area for regulators, technology companies and educational institutions.

PTA said the partnership with Google reflects their shared commitment to empowering parents and teachers, improving digital awareness and creating a safer and more secure online environment in Pakistan.
