Pakistan Braces for Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms on October 6-7

Islamabad, Punjab, KP, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan among areas expected to receive rain.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set for another spell of unsettled weather as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms and isolated hailstorms across the country’s northern and upper regions over the next two days.

According to the Met Office, a westerly wave is expected to enter the upper parts of Pakistan on Monday night and persist until October 7, bringing rain and thunderstorms to parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and the Islamabad region.

The PMD warned that strong winds, hail and lightning could damage weak structures, including roofs and walls of kutcha houses, as well as electric poles, billboards, vehicles and solar panels.

Rain frecast across northern Pakistan

In KP, rain, windstorms and thunderstorms are expected from Monday night until October 7 in several districts, including Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Mohmand, Kohat, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Hangu, Lakki Marwat, Karak, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and Waziristan.

In AJK, isolated rain and hailstorms are expected over the next two days in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur.

Parts of GB, including Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar, may also receive rain during the same period.

For Punjab and the Islamabad region, the PMD forecast rain, windstorms and thunderstorms at isolated places on October 6 and 7. The affected areas include Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Mianwali, Khushab, Sargodha, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Faisalabad.

Meanwhile, mainly hot and dry weather is expected to prevail in Sindh and Balochistan. However, isolated rain, windstorms and thunderstorms are likely in Zhob, Barkhan and Musakhel in Balochistan on Tuesday evening and night.

The weather system is also expected to bring some relief from daytime heat, with temperatures likely to fall by around two to four degrees Celsius during the forecast period.


The PMD advised farmers to plan agricultural activities according to the expected weather conditions and urged relevant authorities to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to prevent untoward incidents.

The latest forecast comes after several spells of heavy rain affected different parts of Pakistan in recent weeks, including Rawalpindi, Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where intense rainfall caused urban flooding, disrupted roads and damaged crops in some areas.
