ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Air Force Group Captain Asim embraced martyrdom after he was shot while trying to save a woman from harassment and possible abduction in Islamabad, according to initial reports.
The incident took place on Ninth Avenue, where Group Captain Asim was travelling with his father when he noticed a woman getting off a motorcycle while the rider was pulling her hand.
He was not on duty at the time. As a responsible citizen, he saw a crime apparently unfolding on the road and refused to remain a spectator.
Group Captain Asim turned back, stopped near the motorcycle and intervened. The woman then ran towards the other side of his vehicle to seek safety.
During this time, the suspect, identified as Saad, started misbehaving with Group Captain Asim and opened fire within moments. The officer sustained serious injuries and later embraced martyrdom, while the suspect fled from the scene.
Woman says officer saved her
According to police, the woman said the suspect was her office colleague and had offered to take her to work. However, she said he changed the route and tried to take her somewhere else, leading to a struggle between them.
“Group Captain Asim intervened in time and saved me,” the woman told police, according to initial details.
Law enforcement agencies have launched operations to arrest the suspect and are investigating the incident from all angles.
A sacrifice beyond duty
Group Captain Asim is survived by his widow, daughter and son.
His sacrifice is being widely praised across the country, with people paying tribute to him as a brave officer who laid down his life while protecting a woman.
In that moment, he chose courage over comfort, action over silence and duty to humanity over personal safety. He was not acting under orders, nor was he seeking recognition. He simply stepped forward when someone needed help.
National and social media users remembered him as a symbol of courage, duty and honour, saying his sacrifice reflects that Pakistan’s soldiers protect not only the country’s borders but also the dignity and safety of its citizens.
His martyrdom stands as a reminder that bravery is a choice made in the hardest moment, when no camera is watching, no order is given and no reward is expected.
