NEW DELHI: The Indian political landscape witnessed a seismic shift as the extremist BJP, faced a surprising setback in the general elections 2024. Experts said that the results, a departure from previous trends, underscored a pressing need for the BJP to recalibrate its political strategy towards inclusivity. Despite expectations fuelled by extensive media and social media campaigns, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fell short of projections. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, once the charismatic face of the BJP and a formidable force in Indian politics, faced a personal setback as the party’s performance failed to meet expected outcomes.
BJP’s Mishandling of Sikh Diaspora in Canada
The BJP’s overconfidence and mishandling of its Sikh diaspora in Canada, coupled with the attempted murder on US soil by rogue RAW’s elements, have significantly tarnished the party’s reputation in Western media. Modi’s non-aligned policy with Western democratic principles failed to garner positive attention from Western media outlets. Consequently, this lack of favorable coverage contributed to the BJP’s underperformance in the general elections.
Similarly, during the election campaign, Prime Minister Modi’s rhetoric against Pakistan failed to resonate with the electorate, as people rejected the narrative of fear-mongering and the portrayal of Modi as the sole saviour from external threats. Modi’s reliance on divisive rhetoric and Hindutva policies, characterized by anti-Muslim sentiments and appeals to nationalism, appeared to have backfired. Instead of rallying behind polarizing tactics, voters prioritized pressing issues like unemployment, inflation, and social inequality. This shift in priorities signalled a rejection of Modi’s divisive strategies and a demand for more substantive solutions to address the nation’s challenges.
The unexpected resurgence of the Congress Party-led opposition alliance defied earlier forecasts, challenging the narrative of its decline. The BJP’s decline in seats, particularly in key states like Uttar Pradesh, hinted a shifting political landscape in India.
The 2024 elections revealed a stark transformation within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), once regarded as a party of the poor but now dominated by the wealthy elite. A striking trend emerged as a significant majority of the winning candidates, 504 out of 543, were revealed to be crorepati politicians, according to data provided by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). This surge in affluent politicians entering Parliament underscored the growing influence of wealth in Indian politics. Among these affluent victors were notable figures such as Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, and Naveen Jindal, epitomizing the concentration of economic power within the political realm. This shift marked a departure from the party’s previous image and hinted at broader implications for the BJP’s political trajectory.
The election results marked a dent in the once-unassailable “Brand Modi.” Despite his adept branding and media management, Modi’s aura of invincibility was tarnished, opening avenues for the opposition. The outcome pointed towards a return to coalition politics, reminiscent of India’s history of diverse coalition governments. If the BJP were to form a government, it would necessitate a more collaborative approach, reliant on allies whose support could prove fragile if neglected.
The BJP must recognize the importance of fostering peaceful relations with its smaller neighbors, refraining from interfering in their domestic politics, and ensuring fair treatment of religious minorities within India. It is imperative to abandon any adventurism that involves the targeting of dissenters and social activists. Given that a vast majority of both Indian citizens and those in other SAARC countries are grappling with poverty, the BJP should steer clear of politics characterized by arrogance, divisiveness, communalism, and hegemony. Failure to do will also result in the party losing its more political share in state assemblies at an accelerated pace.
