BEIRUT, Lebanon: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has said the country is entering a “new phase” focused on securing lasting peace, following the implementation of a 10-day ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

Addressing the nation, Aoun emphasised that Lebanon is moving beyond temporary arrangements towards “permanent agreements” aimed at safeguarding sovereignty, national unity and the rights of its people, according to Al Jazeera.

He stressed that Lebanon would no longer serve as “an arena for anyone’s wars”, signalling a renewed commitment to independent decision-making.

The ceasefire, announced by US President Donald Trump, has opened the door for diplomatic engagement after weeks of intense conflict that caused significant human and economic losses.

Aoun described the moment as a turning point, highlighting the government’s efforts to restore state authority and stability across the country.

Future negotiations

He reaffirmed that any future negotiations would prioritise Lebanon’s national interests, stating that talks were “not a sign of weakness nor a concession”, but a step towards securing peace while protecting sovereignty, reports Reuters.

The president also acknowledged the role of international partners, including Saudi Arabia and the United States, in supporting the ceasefire.

Reports indicate that potential high-level diplomatic engagements are expected in the coming days, reflecting growing momentum for dialogue.

Lebanon has recently taken notable steps to strengthen state control, including measures aimed at limiting non-state military activities. These actions are seen as part of a broader strategy to ensure long-term stability.
