KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait Petroleum Corporation said on Sunday that Iranian drone attacks caused “severe material damage” and fires at its operating units.

In a statement, the company said no injuries were reported. It added that emergency teams were working to contain the fires and prevent them from spreading to other facilities.

Kuwait said the attacks hit critical infrastructure, including power and desalination plants.

According to the country’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, two power and water desalination plants were damaged, leading to the outage of two electricity-generating units.

Ministry spokesperson Fatima Abbas Johar Hayat described the overnight strikes as “criminal aggression” that caused “serious material damage”.

Kuwaiti authorities also reported a fire at the Shuwaikh Oil Sector Complex, which houses the oil ministry and KPC headquarters.

The blaze was triggered by a drone strike, according to the state news agency.

Separately, Kuwaiti state media, citing the finance ministry, said an Iranian drone hit a government office complex, causing significant material damage but no casualties.

No injuries were reported in any of the incidents, officials said.

Iran targeting Gulf states

The attacks extended beyond Kuwait, with neighbouring Gulf countries also reporting damage to energy facilities.

In Bahrain, Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co said several of its operational units were targeted by Iranian drones.

Earlier, Bapco Energies reported that an oil tank at one of its storage facilities had been hit.

Bahraini authorities said fires caused by both incidents were brought under control and extinguished.

No casualties were reported, and damage assessments were under way.

The Ministry of Interior said civil defence teams had “extinguished a fire in the facility” caused “as a result of the Iranian aggression”.

The statement came shortly after the country activated air raid sirens.

Fire at UAE petrochemical plant

In the United Arab Emirates, authorities in Abu Dhabi said they responded to fires at the Borouge plant.

According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, the fires were caused by falling debris following an interception.

Operations at the facility were immediately suspended pending a damage assessment.

No injuries were reported, officials said.
