AMMAN: Jordan on Tuesday announced to enhance the presence of army troops along its borders with Israel warning Tel Aviv against any attempt to forcibly push Palestinians across the Jordan River.

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh said that such act by Israel would be considered a breach of its peace accord with its neighbor.

He said Jordan would take all measures to stop Israel from expelling Palestinians from the West Bank.

The Israel-Hamas conflict has stirred fears in Jordan, host to a large population of Palestinian refugees and their descendants. Israeli right-wing, hard-liners have long advocated a Jordan-is-Palestine solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

Israel has launched a massive bombardment of the Gaza Strip since October 7 that has displaced 1.7 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million people.

Khasawneh said any displacements or creating the conditions that would lead to it by Israel would be considered a declaration of war against Joran and breach of the peace treaty.

Israel asked to respect its obligations under peace treaty

He noted the peace treaty would become a piece of paper if Israel does not respect its obligations and violated it.

The PM warned that any threat to Jordan’s national security would compel the country to put all options on the table. He said recent deployments of troops along the borders with Israel are part of precautionary measures to protect the country’s security.

According to local residents, large columns of armored vehicles and tanks have moved along a main highway towards the Jordan Valley.

Khasawneh went on to say that Israeli actions in the West Bank could trigger wider violence, referring to increased Jewish settler attacks on Palestinian civilians.

US has also asked Israel to curb settler violence, fearing wider conflict.
