WASHINGTON: The US and Japan on Friday reiterated the significance of peace and stability in Taiwan Strait and warned against any use of a nuclear arms by Russia in Ukraine.
The two sides, after a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden also cited “provocations” by Seoul in a joint statement issued by the White House.
The statement said that they strongly oppose any unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force or coercion, anywhere in the world.
Japan-US
Earlier, the US President told Prime Minister Fumio Kishida that Washington remained strongly committed to its alliance with Tokyo and appreciated Japan’s “historic” reforms in the defence sector.
The country’s Prime Minister is in the US on the last stop in a trip to the G7 countries and has been seeking to boost alliances amid concern in the US and Japan about mounting security threats from North Korea and Russia in the region.
President Biden said that his country is completely committed to the alliance, and significantly to the country’s defence. The US President said that they are modernizing their military alliances, building on Tokyo’s historic surge in defence expenditure, and new national security strategy.
Tokyo last month announced its major military build-up since World War II, a departure from 70 years of pacifism due to new challenges in the region.
