MOSCOW: Russia’s Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned that a nuclear conflict between Israel and Iran has become “inevitable in some form” following recent military actions by the United States and Israel against Tehran.
Speaking to Russian media, Medvedev said efforts by Washington to eliminate nuclear threats in the Middle East had instead increased the risk of escalation.
“A nuclear conflict between Israel and Iran is now inevitable in some form,” he said.
He added that US and Israeli actions had failed to address the root causes of the crisis and had instead brought the region closer to a wider confrontation.
Long-term instability warning
Medvedev said prospects for a peaceful resolution in the near term were limited, warning that the Middle East could face prolonged instability if the conflict continues.
He also argued that US involvement has reinforced perceptions among Gulf states that Washington is primarily acting in its own interests and those of Israel.
US position
US President Donald Trump has taken a more optimistic stance, saying the United States has already secured major gains in the conflict.
Trump has announced a temporary 10-day suspension of attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure, signalling a potential opening for de-escalation despite ongoing tensions.
Medvedev’s remarks highlight growing international concern over the risk of further escalation, as military operations continue and diplomatic efforts struggle to contain one of the most volatile crises in the region.
