ISLAMABAD: A district and sessions court in Islamabad on Saturday approved a police plea seeking the physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry who is facing sedition charges after his diatribe against officials of the Pakistan Election Commission.
The Islamabad police had challenged a judicial magistrate’s ruling that had sent the PTI leader on judicial remand against the police plea of physical remand.
Sessions court issues directives
The session court directed the police to produce Fawad Chaudhry before a judicial magistrate to formally seek his physical remand.
Earlier, the PTI leader was produced before the district and sessions court amidst tight security. The police pleaded the physical remand of Fawad Chaudhry against whom a first information report (FIR) had been filed at Islamabad’s Kohsar Police Station on the complaint of the Election Commission Secretary Umar Hameed.
Fawad Chaudhry was taken into custody from his residence in Lahore on Wednesday.
The FIR stated that Fawad allegedly Threatened ECP and their Family Members
The FIR stated that Fawad Chaudhry, in a speech outside the house of Imran Khan at Zaman Park Lahore, allegedly threatened the family members and officials of the ECP.
Police have charged him under the Pakistan Penal Code’s sections 153-A (promotion of enmity between groups), 506 (criminal intimidation), 505 (statement inciting public commotion), and 124-A (sedition).
