Iran Executes Afghan National for Espionage

Tourat Mohammadi, 42, was executed at Karaj Prison on 23 September after spending about two years in detention.

TEHRAN: Iran has executed Tourat Mohammadi, a 42-year-old Afghan national and former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), on espionage charges, according to reports.

Mohammadi was executed at Karaj Prison on Wednesday, 23 September. He had spent approximately two years in detention following his arrest.

Before his arrest, Mohammadi had worked for an organisation affiliated with the IRGC. He was interrogated for seven months at an IRGC intelligence detention facility before being transferred to Karaj Central Prison six days before his execution.

Mohammadi was married and had four children. Reports said his execution was carried out without prior notification to his family or lawyer.

According to figures compiled by human rights organisations, Iran has executed approximately 190 Afghan nationals over the past three years, including 80 in 2024, 84 in 2025 and 23 so far in 2026.
